Members of the Healthier Lives International Science Advisory Panel (ISAP) travelled to New Zealand from 19-23 February 2018 to advise on the progress of Healthier Lives’ research and the most promising directions for future research.  The ISAP is made up of six eminent international scientists, each distinguished in their own field of research.

Panel members visited Healthier Lives research teams around the country. Despite travel disruptions due to ex-Cyclone Gita, they were able to meet research teams on site, together with their community and clinical partners, to gain a good understanding of the Healthier Lives research portfolio.

ISAP members commented that this format was different to the usual scientific reviews where research teams typically come together to give short presentations to reviewers.  They enjoyed the opportunity to gain a much more in-depth appreciation not only of the research that is underway but also the New Zealand context for the work.

Panel members discussed their findings with the Healthier Lives Governance Group and Kāhui Māori at a joint meeting in Dunedin. Healthier Lives Director Professor Jim Mann was delighted with the level of engagement from ISAP members and the invaluable advice for the Challenge as we consider our future directions.

ISAP members were welcomed by the tangata whenua at the beautiful Ōtākou marae on the Otago Peninsula.   They visited the historic Ōtākou memorial church museum and were entertained by a brilliant performance by He Waka Kōtuia Kapa Haka group.
