Healthier Lives researchers on ‘The Cause of Cancer’

The 2017-18 Healthier Lives Seminar Series got off to a great start in Queenstown on Saturday 4 November with a seminar entitled Cancer: Where we’re at… Research, therapy and access, jointly hosted by the Cancer Society Otago & Southland Division.

A lively audience of around 70 people, some of whom had undergone cancer treatment themselves, listened to talks from two of the three Co-Principal Investigators of Healthier Lives’ cancer research project, ctDNA for better cancer management.

Professor Parry Guilford gave a talk on The Cause of Cancer ‒ Genetics and how new drugs can target those genes. Dr Chris Jackson, oncologist and Medical Director of the Cancer Society of New Zealand, spoke about Keytruda, from bench to bedside – The challenge of getting a breakthrough drug to New Zealanders.  Both talks resonated with the audience, who were glad of the chance to question two of New Zealand’s leading experts in this field.

One member of the audience was keen to know about the future of cancer treatment.  Professor Guilford shared his vision of a future where the children of today, won’t fear cancer in the same way as his own generation because it will have become a manageable disease.
