Shaping future research for culturally-centred health interventions for Māori

Māori health providers, community leaders and researchers from around the country gathered at a hui to scope and prioritise research topics for culturally-centred health interventions for Māori. The hui was hosted by Toi Tangata in Auckland.

The aim of the hui was to inform funding decisions about Māori-led research within phase 2 of the Healthier Lives-He Oranga Hauora National Science Challenge as well as help to develop a wider agenda for Māori-led health research in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The hui focused on Māori-led research within Theme 2: Culturally-centred health interventions for Māori and Pasifika (community and whānau ora approaches).

The group at the hui included Māori doctors, health providers and community leaders who all provided invaluable perspectives about the most pressing health issues facing their patients and community members.

Three Healthier Lives Māori-led research teams – OL@-OR@, He Pikinga Waiora and Mana Tū – gave presentations about their findings from the first phase of Challenge research, the lessons they have learned so far and how we could build on these.

Following this, a robust conversation continued about the key factors for Healthier Lives to consider in shaping future research aimed at achieving equitable health outcomes. This included wide-ranging discussions about the systemic issues underlying health inequities.

These discussions and the following workshops initiated a substantial list of research topics and ideas to be developed and prioritised.
