New Zealand patients first to receive new diabetes treatment

People with type 2 diabetes in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin have been the first in the world to trial a new treatment.

The COMPLEMENT Study is using Metabolic Neuromodulation Therapy, in a one-off procedure, to change nerve signals to reduce blood sugar levels.

Almost half of people with type 2 diabetes can’t adequately control their blood sugar despite many medication options, and so they remain at risk of significant and costly complications. With type 2 diabetes reaching near-epidemic proportions new treatments are critically important.

The Study is being lead by expert endocrinologists and cardiologists including two Healthier Lives researchers: Dr Rinki Murphy and Associate Professor Jeremy Krebs.
